This article takes into account the theme of the Himalayas as sacred land, together with the Buddhist notion of “secret valleys” and “hidden lands” as a point of conver- gence with similar ideas produced in Europe and related to the “Kingdom of Prester John”. In several documents produced by ecclesiastics and missionaries during the 16th and 17th centuries, the Himalayas and the Tibetan plateau are identified as possible places for the survival of secluded and unknown Christian communities. The idea of “hidden lands”, actually, is a well-known topic in Tibetan religion and folklore, being related to the role of Padmasambhava in disseminating Buddhism in these regions.
